New beginnings

Can we ever truly start afresh?

If there’s anything that we’ve all experienced during the pandemic, it’s the desire to change something in our lives. Desire not to go back to the previous normal, but to build, create, find something new, something better.

New beginnings, if they are truly new, are scary. We don’t like the unknown. The comfort of the known, no matter how miserable, is often preferred to the fear of the unknown. Every time we want to change, we feel like we owe an explanation to our families, our friends, to our colleagues, to the world. We feel like we have to justify our dissatisfaction and then listen to the explanations on how wrong we are and how we should be reasonable and find meaning in what we already have. If we really want to change, that has to be properly planned, calculated, structured, otherwise, we risk it all.

What the last two years have taught us though, is that planning is pointless. The world will make its turns and twists, despite our plans. Things will be what they will be and no one will ask if that interferes with our carefully laid out plans.

That shouldn’t be scary. On the contrary. It’s fucking liberating. Completely liberating. If you want to change — just change. Don’t ask for permission. Don’t wait. Don’t postpone. This is the perfect time to start a fresh new life.
